North African convoy heads to Gaza to break Israeli blockade

AhlulBayt News Agency: A major land convoy of North African volunteers is set to travel through Egypt to Palestine, aiming to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza.

The convoy, known as the "Resilience Convoy," consists of thousands of volunteers from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. It will depart on Monday, demanding an end to Israel’s war on Gaza, breaking the siege, and delivering humanitarian aid.

The convoy plans to reach Cairo and then proceed to the Rafah border crossing, coordinating efforts with a freedom flotilla currently sailing toward Gaza.

Participants include union leaders, political figures, human rights activists, athletes, lawyers, doctors, journalists, and youth organization members.

Meanwhile, Madleen, a humanitarian aid vessel attempting to break Israel’s naval blockade, has entered Egyptian waters en route to Gaza.

The International Committee for Breaking the Siege on Gaza confirmed on Sunday that Madleen had passed through Alexandria.

“The coming hours will be critical,” the committee stated, as Israel seeks to prevent aid from reaching Gaza.

Among the 12 international campaigners aboard Madleen are climate activist Greta Thunberg, "Game of Thrones" actor Liam Cunningham, and Rima Hassan, a French-Palestinian member of the European Parliament.

Israel has threatened to block the vessel from reaching Gaza, with Israeli officials reportedly attempting to jam its signal and obscure its location.

Despite the threats, organizers remain determined to proceed. “We don’t believe in the impossible,” said convoy spokesperson Wael Naouar.

Israeli war minister Israel Katz has vowed to prevent the aid ship from reaching Gaza, accusing Thunberg and fellow activists of being “Hamas propagandists.”

“To Greta and her fellow Hamas propagandists, I say clearly: You should turn back, because you will not make it to Gaza,” Katz declared on Sunday.

Katz stated that he had ordered the Israeli army to act against the flotilla.

The Madleen, operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, set sail from Sicily last week, carrying urgent humanitarian aid for Gaza, including baby formula, flour, rice, desalination kits, medical supplies, and prosthetics.

Previously, on May 2, Israeli drones attacked another Freedom Flotilla vessel, Conscience, in international waters off Malta, damaging the ship.

Meanwhile, Palestinians in Gaza continue to suffer from Israel’s siege, famine, and war crimes, which have persisted for over 20 months.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel’s war on Gaza has killed nearly 55,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to Gaza’s health authorities.
